Code of Ethics for Biblical Counselors

As biblical counselors, we are called to minister God’s truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), relying wholly on the sufficiency and authority of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Our aim is to glorify God by making disciples, encouraging repentance, and offering hope through the gospel of Jesus Christ. This Code of Ethics affirms our unwavering commitment to biblical faithfulness and personal holiness as we shepherd souls.

1. Authority of Scripture

  • I affirm the Bible as the inspired, infallible, and sufficient Word of God, profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
  • I will counsel from the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27), never substituting secular theories or philosophies in place of biblical truth.

2. Christ-Centered Ministry

  • I will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ as the only true source of healing, hope, and transformation (Romans 1:16).
  • I will point counselees to the person and work of Christ, recognizing that lasting change comes through the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18).

3. Personal Integrity and Holiness

  • I will pursue personal holiness, recognizing that my life must reflect the character of Christ (1 Peter 1:15-16).
  • I will regularly examine myself (2 Corinthians 13:5) and seek accountability in my own walk with the Lord.

4. Love and Compassion

  • I will speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), demonstrating patience, gentleness, and humility toward those I counsel (2 Timothy 2:24-25).
  • I will avoid harshness, manipulation, or judgmentalism, remembering that Christ came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).

5. Confidentiality and Trust

  • I will maintain confidentiality, sharing information only when biblically warranted (Proverbs 11:13), such as in cases of danger, abuse, or unrepentant sin that requires church involvement (Matthew 18:15-17).
  • I will never use confidential information for personal gain or to harm others.

6. Dependence on the Holy Spirit

  • I will counsel prayerfully, relying on the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit rather than my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • I will not seek to fix people, but to faithfully point them to the One who can transform hearts (Ezekiel 36:26).

7. Commitment to the Local Church

  • I recognize the local church as God’s primary context for spiritual growth and accountability (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • I will encourage counselees to actively participate in their local church community and submit to godly leadership (Hebrews 13:17).

8. Ongoing Growth and Stewardship

  • I will diligently study the Word of God, growing in biblical wisdom and counseling skill (Proverbs 1:5).
  • I will steward the gifts God has given me with humility and faithfulness, never counseling beyond my competence (Romans 12:3-8).

In all things, we will seek to glorify God and shepherd His people with grace and truth. We acknowledge that the task of biblical counseling is not merely professional, but pastoral, and must be carried out in fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10) and love for His people (John 13:34-35).

“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” — Colossians 1:28
