Statement of Faith

Certified Biblical Counselors of Yuma affirms the following Statement of Faith as the theological foundation for all counseling, teaching, and ministry practices.

1. The Scriptures

  • We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired, inerrant, infallible, and authoritative Word of God.
  • Scripture is sufficient for all matters of faith, life, and godliness, and is the final authority in biblical counseling.
    • Scripture Reference:
      •  (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Psalm 19:7–11; 2 Peter 1:20–21).

2. The Triune God

  • We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—equal in essence, power, and glory.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14).

3. God the Father

  • We believe God the Father is the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and love.
  • He graciously works all things according to His will and for His glory.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 103:19; Ephesians 1:11).

4. Jesus Christ

  • We believe Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and lived a sinless life.
  • Through His substitutionary death on the cross and His bodily resurrection, He accomplished redemption for sinners.
  • He is the only mediator between God and man and the sole source of salvation.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (John 1:1, 14; Isaiah 53:4–6; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5).

5. The Holy Spirit

  • We believe the Holy Spirit regenerates sinners, indwells believers, convicts of sin, illumines Scripture, and empowers believers for godly living and obedience.
  • The Spirit is essential in producing lasting heart change and spiritual growth.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (John 16:8–13; Romans 8:9–11; Galatians 5:22–23).

6. Humanity and Sin

  • We believe humanity was created in the image of God but fell into sin through Adam’s disobedience.
  • As a result, all people are born sinful by nature and choice, spiritually dead, and unable to please God apart from His grace.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Genesis 1:26–27; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:1–3).

7. Salvation

  • We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
  • Salvation is a gift of God, not a result of human works, and results in justification, regeneration, and ongoing sanctification.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 5:1; Titus 3:5).

8. Sanctification and Biblical Counseling

  • We believe God uses His Word, the Holy Spirit, and the community of believers to bring about progressive sanctification and heart transformation.
  • Biblical counseling is a discipleship ministry that applies Scripture to the issues of life, addressing both suffering and sin with compassion, truth, and the hope of the Gospel.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Colossians 1:28; Romans 15:4; Hebrews 4:12).

9. The Church

  • We believe the universal Church consists of all true believers in Jesus Christ and that the local church is God’s primary means for spiritual growth, accountability, and pastoral care.
  • The purpose of biblical counseling is to support and complement, not replace, the ministry of the local church.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Ephesians 4:11–16; Hebrews 10:24–25).

10. The Return of Christ

  • We believe in the bodily return of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, and the eternal state.
  • Believers will enjoy eternal life with God, and unbelievers will face eternal separation from Him.
    • Scripture Reference:
      • (Matthew 25:31–46; John 5:28–29; Revelation 21:1–4).
